Your Child’s First Day at Nursery Checklist: Everything You Need to Prepare & What to Expect

The first day of nursery is a huge milestone - for both you and your child.

Whether you're feeling excited, nervous, or a bit of both, you're definitely not alone

For many, the idea of handing your baby or toddler to someone else can bring a whirlwind of emotions.

But a little planning can go a long way.

We thought having a solid nursery checklist for parents would help take the guesswork out of this transition.

From packing the right items to emotionally preparing your child (and yourself) for nursery, this guide will walk you through everything you need to make that all-important first day feel as smooth as possible.

Preparing for Nursery – What You Need to Know

Getting ready for nursery isn't just about ticking off items on a list.

It’s about helping your child feel secure in a new environment and giving yourself peace of mind in the process.

Preparing your child for nursery not only reduces stress on their first day, but also builds confidence in your routine moving forward.

Take the time to visit different nurseries in your area before deciding on one. Check out our 5 top tips to guide you through this decision.

Make sure you have the conversation with your childcare setting about settling-in procedures

  • Will your child attend for an hour a day to begin with?

  • Is it ok for you to ring during the day to check how your child is doing?

  • Etc.

Within a few days, most babies and toddlers begin to find the transition easier and settle quicker.

Most nurseries will have a structured routine that includes playtime, snack & lunch breaks, naps, and outdoor activities.

If your child is joining Lucky Beans Childcare, a typical day might start with a warm welcome, some breakfast, followed by a bit of free play.

In the afternoon, the children may explore outside, have a nap, and take part in structured activities such as Spanish, tennis, or dance!

The Ultimate Nursery Packing List

Packing the right items can make a huge difference in your child’s comfort and your peace of mind.

Here’s our nursery checklist for parents of what to bring to nursery:

  • 2-3 changes of clothes, including socks

  • Waterproof bag (such as a nappy bag) for any soiled/wet clothes

  • Bibs, muslin cloths

  • Several nappies or pull-ups (more than you think you’ll need - accidents happen!)

  • A packet of wipes

  • Any creams or ointments your child may need

  • A bottle or a sippy cup

  • A beloved blanket, soft toy, or dummy

  • Sunhat and suncream for warmer months

  • Weather appropriate clothes and shoes (raincoat, gloves, wellies etc)

  • Any medications your child requires. * It is highly important to speak to your childcare provider about any medication, how it should be administered, and complete any relevant documentation

Preparing Your Child for Nursery

The physical checklist is important, but emotional readiness matters just as much.

We have gathered a list of behaviours to help identify and support your baby’s readiness for nursery that you may want to check out.

If your child is old enough to understand, start talking to them about nursery a few days, or even a few weeks, before their first day.

Describe it as an exciting place where they’ll get to play, meet new friends, and have fun.

Visit the setting together!

Establishing a simple morning routine, including wake-up time, breakfast, and getting dressed, helps signal what’s coming and gives your child a sense of stability.

Consistency is key here.

If your child experiences separation anxiety, it can help to practice short separations in advance - perhaps leaving them with a grandparent or babysitter for a little while for them to get used to the idea that you’ll always come back.

And remember - tears are totally normal.

Some children settle quickly, while others take a little longer. Both are completely okay.

What to Expect in the First Few Days of Nursery - Tips for Parents

It’s common for the first few drop-offs to feel emotional - for both you and your child.

Your child may be tearful, clingy, or simply overwhelmed. These early days are part of the adjustment period.

Please try not to worry.

Nursery staff are experienced in handling first-day jitters and will use a variety of strategies to help your little one feel comforted, safe, and engaged.

Most nurseries provide daily updates either through an app, a written report, or a brief chat at pickup.

This might include details like how long your child napped, what they ate, and which activities they enjoyed. It’s a great way to stay connected and reassured throughout the early weeks.

Tip: Speak to your childcare provider about the possibility of you phoning during the day for the first few days for reassurance.

Starting nursery is a big step - for you and your child!

With the right preparation and mindset, it can be the beginning of a wonderful new chapter for your family.

Packing thoughtfully, talking openly, and staying consistent with routines will help your child feel more at home in their new setting.

Remember, this is a learning curve for you too

Be kind to yourself, and take each day as it comes.

With time, the drop-offs will get easier, and the pick-ups will be full of stories, smiles, and sticky hands.
